The musical world premiere of The Physician, the international best seller by Noah Gordon, will be staged in 2016 in Fulda, Germany, it was announced today by producer Peter Scholz, president of Spotlight Musicals GmbH.
During the past decade Fulda has become celebrated as a leading center for German musical productions, due to the work of Scholz and his partner, the composer Dennis Martin.
The enormous success of their musical stage production of Saint Joan, which has thus far been shown to more than 250,000 theatergoers, has aroused international interest and, according to Scholz, helped to persuade Noah Gordon to grant his company the rights for the first stage production of The Physician. “Noah was extraordinarily interested in how a musical could be made out of such a complex story,” Scholz said.
The Physician is the story of Rob Cole, a young Englishman who grows up in London during the early Middle Ages and who wants to learn the secrets of medicine. In the West this knowledge is not available, so he sets off on a dangerous journey to Persia in order to study under Ibn Sina (Avicenna), the greatest physician of his time. As a Christian, Rob cannot gain access to the knowledge he yearns for, so he takes on the identity of a Jew, thereby placing his life at risk. On his journey he meets the love of his life and finally discovers himself.
The Physician has been published in 35 countries selling millions of copies worldwide, and during the past year an international audience of five million saw the film based on the novel. In Germany seven million viewers saw a two-part television mini-series.
“The story is about the coexistence of different cultures, so it could hardly be more topical,” Peter Scholz said.
Dennis Martin said that the story “has everything a good, dramatic musical needs, and the material provides me with many possibilities for the musical arrangement.”
Scholz said he had told Noah Gordon that “I very much hope that we can welcome you here in Fulda. That would be an amazing present for the premiere.” The author had stated that “nothing would make me happier than to be at the premiere with a few friends,” Scholz said.
The producer said that the first 82 performances already are scheduled. But there are clear signs that the company and others hope for and look forward to a long run. “We expect tens of thousands of new guests from all over Germany and Europe who will visit Fulda to see the musical adaptation of The Physician,” said Elizabeth Schrimpf of the Fulda Tourist Information Office. “As we did with the musical Pope Joan in 2011, we have already prepared attractive offers and special guided tours.”
The world premiere of the musical will took place on June 17, 2016.
