An extraordinary gift
Rob Cole grows up in medieval London and has the gift of sensing impending death. When he is orphaned at an early age, he joins a traveling bather, from whom he learns simple healing methods. But his thirst for knowledge drives him on. He hears about Ibn Sina, the greatest physician of his time, and decides to travel to Persia to study at his school.
The long journey to Isfahan
On his arduous journey to Persia, Rob meets Mary, a young Scottish woman, in an inn who touches him deeply. But their paths diverge as he pursues his dream. When he arrives in Isfahan, Rob encounters an obstacle: Christians are denied access to the madrassa. In order to be admitted, he makes a momentous decision and pretends to be a Jew, Jesse Ben Benjamin. Will his deceptive maneuver be successful?
Knowledge and danger
Rob deepens his knowledge in the madrassa and impresses with his skills. But when the plague breaks out in Isfahan, the entire empire suddenly faces a catastrophe. While he struggles to find a cure with Ibn Sina and his friends, the balance of power is shaken: his friend Karim is crowned Shah. At the same time, Mary makes a dramatic return to Rob's life. But his thirst for knowledge brings him into conflict with strict religious rules. How far will he go?
