What is it all about? The story

A princess between two worlds

At the age of four, the Hungarian king's daughter Elisabeth is brought to the Thuringian court to grow up in the family of her future husband, Landgrave Ludwig. However, she remains an outsider at court. Only her maid Guda and Ludwig become her only allies. Early on, she rejects courtly decadence and seeks refuge in faith - a decision with far-reaching consequences.

Love, faith and rebellion

After the death of his father, Ludwig becomes Landgrave and marries Elisabeth out of love - against the opposition of his family. When the strict preacher Konrad von Marburg comes to court, Elisabeth finds a kindred spirit in him. He becomes her confessor and urges her to become more and more ascetic. Her faith becomes her purpose in life, but the court sees this as a threat.

Sacrifice for the poor

While Louis goes to war, Elisabeth sets up a poorhouse and opens the granaries for the hungry. Her care knows no bounds, but her behavior causes open rejection at court. Ludwig's brother Henry in particular sees her as a threat to his power. Only Sophie, Ludwig's mother, slowly begins to understand Elisabeth's actions - but it is already too late.

The price of devotion

After Ludwig's death, Elisabeth is cast out of court. She humbly accepts her fate and devotes herself to the poor and sick in Marburg. But Konrad von Marburg demands ever greater sacrifices from her. While she distributes all her possessions, Konrad's desire for power grows immeasurably. But how far can Elisabeth go - and what price will she pay?
