What is it all about? The story
The dream of freedom
The young shoemaker's apprentice Adolph Kolping feels trapped in his narrow world. Industrialization brings progress, but also suffering. Driven by a thirst for education and the hope of a better future, he goes on a journey. In Cologne, he meets the cheerful craftsman Karl Wagner, who will put his life to the test.
Departure into a new world
While Karl finds work in a steel factory, Kolping longs for more. He gains access to education through the wealthy Frieda Karcher. She recognizes his potential and encourages him to follow his dream: To become a priest. But the shadows of industrialization cannot be overlooked: The workers are exploited and Karl is in danger of losing everything.
The call for change
Kolping becomes a priest and moves to Elberfeld. But his sermons go unheard - the people have other worries. It is only through the teacher Breuer that he recognizes the true need of the workers. When he goes to the slums, he unexpectedly meets Karl again, who is now bitterly struggling to survive. Kolping suddenly realizes that words alone will not change the world.
The fight for justice
Kolping is committed to helping the workers, but the factory owners will not be swayed - especially the unscrupulous factory owner Karcher. Karl makes a dangerous decision: he calls for resistance. When Karcher allows himself to be celebrated as a „man of progress“, the situation escalates. While the town is on the brink of revolution, Karl is caught up in a maelstrom of violence.
Sacrifice and hope
Kolping realizes that his path will not be an easy one. But despite all the setbacks, he holds on to his dream: a community for young workers that gives them support, education and a future. Will he succeed in changing the world? Or will the resistance be too great?
