What is it all about? The story
In the name of faith
The English missionary Boniface travels to Germania with his young disciple Sturmius to convert the pagans to Christianity. They ask the Frankish ruler Charles Martel for protection. He gives them an estate in Buchonia, which is farmed by the free farmer Luidger and his sister Alrun.
The wrath of the heathen
Following a tip-off from Luidger, Boniface sets off with his entourage to confront the pagan duke Radbod, who has gone to the sacred oak of Donar for a sacrificial ritual. Boniface intervenes and fells the tree in front of the pagans with a single axe blow. The pagans freeze - and Radbod swears revenge.
Doubts about your own path
Boniface believes his mission is successful as more and more pagans are baptized. But a desperate woman confronts him: People are following his faith not out of conviction, but out of fear. She tells him about the greed of Bishop Gewilip of Mainz, who is exploiting the people. Boniface is plagued by doubts and travels to Mainz to get to the bottom of the truth.
A dangerous alliance
In Mainz, Boniface meets Gewilip, who is only interested in wealth and power. Horrified, Boniface obtains his deposition by the Pope and receives permission to build a monastery in Fulda. Seeking revenge, Gewilip secretly forms an alliance with the humiliated Radbod in order to lure Boniface into a trap. Unsuspecting, Boniface follows a supposedly papal order to Friesland - a fateful journey.
The fateful journey
While Sturmius supervises the construction of the monastery in Fulda, he realizes the truth: the papal order is a forgery - he immediately sets off with his companions to warn Boniface. Can he still avert disaster?
