What is it all about? The story
The king without peace
Prussia, end of the 18th century: Friedrich the Great, aged and embittered, has retired to his Sanssouci Palace. While he is writing down his life story, a figure from the past appears in his mind: it is Hans Hermann von Katte, his executed friend. Forced to confront his memories, Friedrich recounts his dramatic youth - which haunts him to this day.
The prince who doesn't want to be a soldier
As a young crown prince, Friedrich is bullied by his father Friedrich William I: His son's enthusiasm for music, art and literature was a thorn in his side - he demanded obedience and discipline. But at the Dresden court, Friedrich discovered a world of art and free thought. There he meets Hans Hermann von Katte, with whom he soon forms a deep friendship.
Rebellion and tragedy
Strengthened in his self-confidence, Friedrich increasingly rebels against his father. Together with von Katte, he plans to flee Prussia. But the plan fails - Friedrich is captured and Katte is condemned as a traitor. The king wants to break his son for good and forces him to witness the cruel execution of his friend. A moment that will change him forever.
The road to fame
After the death of his father, Friedrich ascends the throne and is celebrated as a beacon of hope. But in order to secure Prussia's power, he now had to take up arms himself. His wars bring him historical fame, but no peace. In his Sanssouci Palace, he surrounds himself with great thinkers such as Voltaire, but the past haunts him.
A life full of victories and losses
Friedrich achieves important victories and is celebrated as “The Great”, but the price for this is high. His sister Wilhelmine, once his closest confidante, holds up a mirror to him: He has become more like his addicted father than he ever wanted. When the Seven Years' War begins, he fights not only for Prussia's future, but also against the demons of his past. Lonely and alienated from the world, Friedrich must finally face the painful truth: Was all his rum worth the price?
