Graduate engineer Aleš Valášek, architect, overall winner of the prestigious British Lindbury Prize for Stage Design and winner of the German Musical Theater Award 2023 for Best Costume Design („Dällebach Kari“, Thunerseespiele), is an internationally active architect, stage and costume designer for musical theater, opera, ballet, drama and film. He studied architecture and urban planning at the Technical University of Liberec and costume design at the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague and completed further studies at the London College of Fashion and the renowned Motley Theatre Design Course in London; in 2022 he received several Regional BroadwayWorld Award nominations (Best Costume Design) for „Titanic“, „Anastasia“ and „The King and I“.
He has designed sets and costumes for more than 100 productions at European theaters and festivals, including „Evita“ and „Pippin“ (Staatsoperette Dresden), „Mary Poppins“ (Thunerseespiele), „Sweeney Todd“, „Anastasia“ and „Titanic“ (Linz), the Klangwolke Festival (Linz), „Aspects of Love“ (Theater Münster), „The King and I“ (Seefestspiele Mörbisch), „Parade“ (Theater Regensburg) and „Singin’ in the Rain“ (Landestheater Salzburg). His opera and ballet repertoire includes Tchaikovsky's „Swan Lake“, Minkus’ „La Bayadère“, Adam's „Giselle“, Dvořák's „Rusalka“, Bizet's „Carmen“, Puccini's „Turandot“ and Monteverdi's „L'Orfeo“.
In 2024, he made his US debut as costume designer for „The Sound of Music“ at the Houston Grand Opera. Previous projects include „Little Shop of Horrors“, „Next to Normal“, „Zorro“ and „Curtains“ by John Kander as well as the costumes for „An American in Paris“ (Linz and German tour). In 2010, he worked with Alain Boublil, the creator of „Les Misérables“, on the Czech premiere of „Marguerite - the Musical“. 2016-2017 he was an external lecturer for costume design at DAMU in Prague. In 2014, he was portrayed in the documentary „Follow your dream“ on Czech television ČT.
