Aleš Valašek is a stage and costume designer and architect. He acquired his artistic skills in Prague and Liberec, Czech Republic, as well as in London. In 2009 he was the overall winner of the prestigious British Lindbury Prize for Stage Design.
His portfolio includes stage and costume designs for many productions in film, opera, ballet, musicals and drama, including „Swan Lake“, „Giselle“, „Rusalka“, „Carmen“, „Turandot“ and Monteverdi's „Orfeo“. Musicals include „Little Shop of Horrors“ (stage design/costumes), „Zorro“ (stage design), „American Idiot“ (stage design) and „Next to Normal“ (stage design/costumes). He designed sets and costumes for the operetta „Polenblut“ in Ukraine, worked personally with Alain Boublil on the Czech premiere of „Marguerite - the Musical“ and designed the costumes for the German-language EA of the Broadway musical „An American in Paris“ in Linz.
In 2024 Aleš made his US debut and designed the costumes for „Sound of Music“ (directed by F. Zambello, Houston Grand Opera, TX). His most recent works include „Anastasia“ (Linz), „Aspects of Love“ (Münster), „The King and I“ (Seefestspiele Mörbisch), „Pippin“ (Staatsoperette Dresden), „Mary Poppins“ (Thunerseespiele, Switzerland) and „Sweeney Todd“ (Linz).
He was nominated for three productions in the „Best Costume Design“ category at the Regional Broadwayworld.com Awards. Aleš taught at the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague in 2016 and 2017.
In 2019, he designed an award-winning sculpture collection for the Hořice Museum (Czech Republic).
In 2014, a documentary film about his life and work entitled „Following the dream...“ was made for Czech television.
Under the direction of F. Zambello, he developed the costume design for the Linz Klangwolke Festival.
In 2023, he was awarded the German Musical Theater Prize in the „Best Costume Design“ category for „Dällebach Kari“.
