Gil Mehmert studied directing under August Everding at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Munich. His 170 productions, which cover all genres between drama and musical theater, have been staged at around 80 different renowned theaters in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, China, Japan, South Korea and the USA.

His work has received numerous awards, including the Impulse Festival's Directing Prize in 2001, the prize for the best production at the Bavarian Theatre Days 2005, the Inthega Prize 2006, the Hamburg Rolf Mares Prize 2008, the Monica Bleibtreu Prize 2019, the Austrian Music Theatre Prize 2020 and the „Cologne Cultural Event 2021“ award.
After several short film projects and music videos, the feature film „Aus der Tiefe des Raumes“, which was awarded the rating „particularly valuable“, was released in 2004 based on his own screenplay and won the prize for best newcomer production at the Bavarian Film Awards and was nominated in two categories for the German Film Awards.

In recent years, Gil Mehmert has made a name for himself as one of the leading directors in the musical genre in the German-speaking world. In autumn 2014, for example, the Stage Entertainment production „Das Wunder von Bern“ premiered at the purpose-built Theater an der Elbe in Hamburg, where he was responsible for the script as well as the direction.
Further libretti were created for the musicals „Wüstenblume“, „Einstein: A Matter of Time“ and „Goethe!“, which is currently being produced in Tokyo and Osaka. In addition to premieres in drama and opera, Gil Mehmert has also directed the German-language and European premieres of the musicals „High Fidelity“, „The Witches of Eastwick“, „Priscilla“, „Once“ and „Tootsie“. Since 2003, Gil Mehmert has been a professor of staging and directing in the musical department at the Folkwang University of the Arts.
