Matthias Davids played numerous roles - including Riff in „West Side Story“ and the title role in „Jesus Christ Superstar“ - before turning to directing. Today, he is one of the most renowned musical theater directors in the German-speaking world.
His „Sweeney Todd“ at the Volksoper Vienna and his DSE of „Natascha, Pierre und der große Komet von 1812“ (Landestheater Linz) received the Austrian Musical Theater Prize, „In 80 Tagen um die Welt“ (Linz) received 6 awards at the German Musical Theater Prize and the Austrian Musical Theater Prize. More than one million spectators saw his „Saturday Night Fever“ in Cologne; „Ghost - Nachricht von Sam“ was performed over 600 times by Stage Entertainment in Berlin, Hamburg and Stuttgart after the Linz DSE.
His love of new material is reflected in over forty premieres and national premieres. Davids has worked at the Komische Oper and the Friedrichstadtpalast in Berlin, the Gärtnerplatztheater in Munich, the state theaters in Mannheim, Hanover, Kassel, Saarbrücken and Nuremberg, for the festivals in Bad Hersfeld, Magdeburg and Erfurt, the Cologne Musical Dome, the Graz Opera, the St. Gallen Theater, the Maag Musical Hall in Zurich, the Norske Teatret in Oslo, the Tromsø Theater and the Herodes Attikus Theater at the foot of the Acropolis in Athens.
Matthias Davids has been Artistic Director of Musicals at the Landestheater Linz since the end of 2012. He built up the musical division there, which sets standards in establishing the genre in German-speaking theater with its own musical ensemble. The world premieres of „Around the World in 80 Days“, „The Hare with Amber Eyes“, „The Wave“ and „The Queens“ were each named Best Musical at the German Musical Theater Awards in 2018, 2019, 2021 and 2024.
