Thorsten Tinney studied at the Hanover University of Music and Drama. This was followed by engagements at the Vereinigte Bühnen Wien, where he appeared in „Freudiana“, as Raoul in „The Phantom of the Opera“, Valentin in „Kiss of the Spider Woman“ and Billy Flynn in „Chicago“.
He then played leading roles in musicals in Italy, Austria, Germany and Switzerland. He has appeared in „Line 1“, „West Side Story“, „Sweeney Todd“, „City of Angels“, „Sophie's World“, „Evita“, „The Three Musketeers“, „Sweet Charity“, „Anatevka“, „The Little Shop of Horrors“, „The Apartment“, „Jekyll & Hyde“ and Mackie Messer in „The Threepenny Opera“, among others. In Berlin, he played Constable Kloppstock in „Pinkelstadt“, „The Wizard of Camelot“ at the Friedrichstadtpalast, „Dirty Dancing“ at the Theater am Potsdamer Platz and Henry Higgins in „My Fair Lady“. He also played this role in Hamburg, Munich and Nuremberg. He toured Japan as Duke Max of Bavaria in „Elisabeth“ and played Fred/Petruchio in „Kiss me, Kate!“. He appeared in „Die schwarzen Brüder“, at the Hanover State Opera in „How to succeed in Business“ and at the Vereinigte Bühnen Wien in „Mozart!“ and Brusco/Don Camillo in „Don Camillo und Peppone“. At the Palladium Theater Stuttgart he played Vlad in „Anastasia“, at the Graz Opera in „Guys and Dolls“, Assmann in „Ku'damm 56“ at the Theater des Westens in Berlin, George in „La Cage aux Folles“ at the Volksoper Vienna, Earl von Huntington/John Little in „Robin Hood“ at the Musicalsommer Fulda as well as in Munich, Zurich, Frankfurt and Linz. In the world premiere of „Das Glück ist eine Orange“ at the Landestheater Detmold, he is currently playing the lead role of Gustav M. Hardorp.
